Attachments were long considered rudimentary and useless, but that is no longer the case. Today we know it serves several important purposes. It is a reservoir of beneficial intestinal bacteria that allows people to heal faster from diseases such as dysentery and cholera (if severe diarrhea persists). It plays a role in the immune system as it “trains” B and T cells to attack to fight off viruses and bacteria. It is also part of the lymphatic system.
