There is no reason for creating an appendix per se. In the fetal period, it is part of the intestinal continuity and is not a special structure, but due to the differential rotation and growth of what later becomes the cecum, the cecum becomes a tubular structure with a cecum. Whether the different growth occurs is likely due to genes in the embryo that have been altered by evolution to function in this way, leading to the specificity of the cecum. It was once thought to be the remnants of the almond but has recently been hypothesized to resemble an ‘almond’ due to the concentration of lymphoid tissue within it.
